Pancrase 20th Anniversary: What's Necessary
Pancrase’s 20th anniversary event showed the MMA world the direction the promotion has taken from here on out for better or worse. On the road to its next ten years, these objectives need more focus.
Expand the women’s division
Pancrase has a Queen of Pancrase but the women’s division has not been built up. It is the only weight class without a top 5 ranking. Japan has many up and coming female fighters, however, globally there are not many promotions headlining female fighters below Ronda Rousey’s weight class. Pancrase can quickly build excitement over the division by creating a tournament that features an upcoming roster of female fighters.
More Online Content
Pancrase did its first online pay per view this year through ustream. The promotion should continue to have its main fight cards streamed live or on demand. Prelimanary bouts and smaller events should be available on a Pancrase youtube channel, facebook page, or its website. Online content will build a stronger following with Japan fans not in attendance and fans overseas.
Over the years, Pancrase has consistently brought in fighters from the best gyms in the world, yet it seems as though the organization only caters its content to Japanese speakers. International exposure deserves international webpages. Pancrase needs to regularly update its English site and create a Portuguese site. If online streaming comes to fruition, commentating in English and Portuguese will be critical to building a fan base overseas. These are the global standards of today’s MMA world.
